Noncedo Madubedube
General Secretary, Equal Education
she, her, hers

“Disrupting persistent inequality in the world requires a ravenous appetite for connection with others. Exchanging stories can help us name our oppressions and collectively build the courage to act towards our emancipatory ideals.”
Noncedo Madubedube is the general secretary of Equal Education, a youth-led social movement that focuses on equal access to education in South Africa. She is a queer, Black woman, a social justice advocate, and an expert in the theory and practice of education. She is deeply invested in creating spaces and conversations that build, connect, and sustain community and civil society movements.
Noncedo has over 15 years of experience in community organizing, strategic campaign development, popular education, coalition building, and global solidarity and international advocacy work. With Equal Education, she works at grassroots and national levels to create more equitable opportunities for learners, improve and maintain school conditions, and increase confidence in the public education system in South Africa. She also serves on the board of the Health Justice Initiative and the Reading Panel 2030.
Noncedo believes that education is a key element to building vibrant, creative social movements, and that everyone in the world deserves a quality education. Now more than ever, we need a robust social justice sector full of informed and engaged people who are ready to take action to safeguard our collective humanity.
