Summary Description

The Strengthening Human Rights Worldwide initiative is one of the flagship portfolios at the Ford Foundation. For decades, this work has supported pioneering human rights advocacy at the global level, anchoring some of the most prestigious institutions and individuals throughout the world. As this work enters an exciting new phase, the Program Officer will develop and manage a portfolio of grants and related activities that focus on addressing current challenges of the human rights movement at the global level, with particular attention to the changing geopolitical context worldwide. By supporting international and Global South-based organizations, this portfolio seeks to invest in the next generation of human rights leaders throughout the world. Through partnerships between these organizations, the initiative aims to increase the impact of global efforts to improve access to basic rights by the poor and marginalized. The Program Officer, working closely with the unit Director and the program Vice President, will have the opportunity to further refine the current grant making strategy to ensure that the strategy is at the cutting edge of human rights work in the twenty-first century and that it is effectively implemented.

The Program Officer will formulate grantmaking strategies; identify potential grantees; solicit, review and respond to grant proposals; monitor grants and other developments in the field; and prepare recommendations for Foundation funding. A core aspect of this work will be to lead the implementation of an effort to strengthen the regional and global presence and work of a select group of organizations in the Global South. The Program Officer will develop and maintain close working relationships with existing and potential grantees, and with relevant leaders in government, civil society and other funders, and promote coordination and cumulative learning among key stakeholders. Along with knowledge of traditional human rights strategies, the Program Officer will bring an understanding of broader concerns regarding the intersection between the lack of access to basic rights and racism, gender, poverty, and other social dynamics. S/he will bring knowledge of and experience in networking and alliance building to effect change.

The Strengthening Human Rights Worldwide initiative is part of the Foundation’s worldwide Rights and Governance unit, which currently includes initiatives in the areas of Economic and Social Rights, Transparent and Accountable Governance and Reforming the Global Financial System. Joining a dynamic human rights staff working on a range of issues around the world, the Program Officer will also work closely and in coordination with staff in multiple program areas of the Foundation in New York and overseas.
