We invite you to a guided exhibition tour in Spanish of Humid Traces with curator Federico Pérez Villoro on Friday, February 20 at 2:00 p.m.

Humid Traces explora las formas en que los cuerpos de agua son convertidos en fronteras en el contexto de temperaturas crecientes y de fenómenos climáticos extremos. La exhibición reúne a un grupo de artistas de diferentes partes del mundo cuyas prácticas abordan el uso estratégico del agua para reforzar las divisiones artificiales del espacio. De esta manera, presentan evidencia de los efectos violentos de las tecnologías utilizadas para controlar la migración.

Humid Traces explores the ways in which bodies of water are turned into borders in the context of rising temperatures and extreme weather events. The show brings together a group of artists from around the globe whose work addresses the tactical use of water to reinforce artificial divisions of space. In doing so, they produce evidence on the violent effects of technologies used to control migration.

Sobre el curado / About the Curator

Federico Pérez Villoro es un artista e investigador establecido en la Ciudad de México que explora la relación entre la tecnología y las ecologías políticas. Su obra reciente investiga la morfología cambiante del Río Grande / Bravo y de la frontera cambiante entre México y Estados Unidos. Su trabajo ha sido expuesto internacionalmente en instituciones como el Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Espacio Odeón, Centre A: Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Palm Springs Art Museum, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, Museo de Arte de Zapopan, y Museo de Filatelia de Oaxaca. Es fundador de Materia Abierta, un programa de teoría, arte y tecnología en la Ciudad de México, desarrollado en colaboración con el Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo, el Museo Tamayo y la Casa del Lago UNAM. Es investigador residente en TBA21-Academy, donde investiga el acceso al agua potable en el Caribe. En 2023, recibió la Beca Jumex de la Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo y la Beca C/Change del Goethe-Institut y Gray Area en Estados Unidos. Ha sido residente en Pivô Pesquisa y Capacete en Brasil, y en OCAT en China. Sus textos han sido publicados por NACLA Report on the Americas, Luna Córnea, ADOCS, DELUS, The Serving Library, Printed Matter, C Magazine, Gato Negro Ediciones, diSONARE, Walker Art Center y Quinto Elemento Lab. Federico ha enseñado en la Rhode Island School of Design y California College of the Arts y dictado conferencias en UC Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University, ETH Zurich, Rutgers University, CalArts, The New School, y Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

Federico Pérez Villoro is an artist and researcher based in Mexico City exploring the relationship between technology and political ecologies. His recent work investigates the ever-evolving morphology of the Rio Grande / Bravo and the shifting border between Mexico and the United States. His work has been exhibited at institutions such as Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Espacio Odeón, Centre A: Vancouver International Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Palm Springs Art Museum, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, Museo de Arte de Zapopan, and Museo de Filatelia de Oaxaca. He is the founder of Materia Abierta, a program on theory, art, and technology in Mexico City developed with Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo, Museo Tamayo, and Casa del Lago UNAM. He is a research resident at TBA21-Academy where he investigates access to fresh water in the Caribbean. In 2023, he received the Jumex Grant Program Award from the Jumex Arte Contemporáneo Foundation and the C/Change Fellowship from the Goethe-Institut and Gray Area in the United States. He has been a resident at Pivô Pesquisa and Capacete in Brazil and at OCAT in China.
