Alison O’Daniel is a visual artist and filmmaker who works with moving images, performance, sculpture, and large-scale installations. Informed by her experiences of being d/Deaf/hard of hearing and collaborations with others on the d/Deaf spectrum—including composers, athletes, musicians, and actors—O’Daniel builds a visual, aural, and haptic vocabulary that reveals a politics of sound that exceeds the auditory. She has screened and exhibited in galleries and museums internationally, including Kunsthalle Osnabrück in Osnabrück, Germany; Hammer Museum in Los Angeles; Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow; Centre Pompidou in Paris; Centro Centro in Madrid; Renaissance Society in Chicago; Art in General in New York; Centre d’art Contemporain Passerelle in Brest, France; Tallinn Art Hall in Tallinn, Estonia; and Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, Nebraska.
O’Daniel is a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow and has also received grants from Sundance, Creative Capital, Field of Vision, ITVS, Chicken & Egg, SFFILM, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, the Rema Hort Mann Foundation, and the Center for Cultural Innovation. She has attended residencies at the Wexner Center Film/Video Studio Program, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She was included in Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film,” and writing on her work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Artforum, The Los Angeles Times, BOMB, and ArtReview. She is represented by Commonwealth and Council in Los Angeles and is an assistant professor of film at California College of the Arts in San Francisco.
