Montasser Kamal serves as acting representative in the foundation's Middle East and North Africa office in Cairo. His grant making focuses on areas of sexuality, reproductive health and HIV/AIDS in the foundation's Middle East and North Africa office in Cairo. He supports efforts to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights in the region.
Montasser's work has the goal of empowering people to access knowledge and practical tools that enable them to lead healthy sexual and reproductive lives, with dignity, free of stigma, discrimination or coercion.
Before joining the Ford Foundation in 2007, Montasser headed the Multilateral Health Institutions and Global Partnerships Group at the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in Ottawa, where his portfolio included HIV/AIDS treatment; prevention technologies such as vaccines and microbicides research; and reproductive health research and training. He previously managed programs focused on women's health.
Montasser earned his M.D. from Cairo University; a Ph.D. in medical anthropology from McGill University, Canada; a master’s degree in medical anthropology from Brunel University, Britain; and a diploma in social development from Coady International Institute, Nova Scotia.
