Mario Bronfman

Representative Mexico City

Mario Bronfman is representative for the foundation's Mexico and Central America office in Mexico City. He oversees the office's overall grant strategy, which focuses on migration and excluded groups. His individual grant making concentrates on freedom of expression issues, with emphasis on cultivating diverse voices and inclusive arts spaces.

Before joining the Ford Foundation in 2004, Mario was director of research at the National AIDS Council of Mexico. He has also served as coordinator of advisers for the Mexican undersecretary of health and executive director of the Center for Health Systems Research at the National Institute of Public Health.

Mario, who is past president of the Social and Behavioral Research Committee of the Global Program on AIDS at the World Health Organization, has been a visiting professor at universities and higher education institutions in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, France, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay and Venezuela. He has written more than 50 published scientific articles and book chapters, and authored and co-authored numerous books, the most recent on migration and AIDS.

He was appointed co-chairman of the Scientific Program Committee of the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico in August 2008.

He holds a Ph.D. in public health from the Public Health School at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro and a bachelor's degree in sociology from the National University of Buenos Aires.
