Letícia Osório works on human rights issues in the foundation’s Rio de Janeiro office. Her grant making supports the development of effective and sustainable organizations and institutions, and the mechanisms through which human rights and social justice can be strengthened and enforced at the global, regional and national levels.

Before joining the foundation in 2011, Letícia worked in a variety of capacities with NGOs and governments in the defense of land and housing rights of vulnerable groups worldwide. From 1998 to 2002, she coordinated the Department of Land Regularisation and Resettlements of the State Government of Rio Grande do Sul. In 2002, she established the Americas Programme of the Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions in Porto Alegre, a nongovernmental human rights organisation based in Geneva that focuses on economic, social and cultural rights. She participated in the Advisory Group on Forced Evictions as an adviser to the executive director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) from 2004 to 2010. Most recently, she directed the Human Rights Clinic of the University of Essex, where she also coordinated a project on Roma rights.

Letícia has worked on human rights issues in Brazil, Argentina, Guatemala, Mexico, Suriname, Colombia, Nicaragua, Honduras, the United States, United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Cambodia, Serbia, and Kosovo. She has written articles and books on land, property and housing rights as well as on rights for Roma and indigenous populations. She has been honored by the British Council and was recognized with the Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme of the Higher Education Funding Council for England to conduct research at well-established U.K. academic institutions.

Letícia is a Brazilian lawyer and holds a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the Federal University of Rio Grande Do Sul (Brazil). She earned her Ph.D. in law from the University of Essex, U.K.
