31 May 2012Documentary Film Festival Spotlights Human Rights Issues
The Ford Foundation is pleased to present “Cinema and Human Rights,” a festival of documentary films to be held in Santiago, Chile, from June 5 to 17. Presented in collaboration with Cineteca Nacional del Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, the festival is part of a program of activities in the Andean Region and Southern Cone marking the 50th anniversary of our work in Latin America.

A slate of 34 groundbreaking films from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the United States—several produced with support from the foundation—will be screened.
The festival will highlight a range of compelling stories that share a core message: All people should be able to live with dignity and fairness. Featured films include “Sing Your Song,” a portrait of the American singer and human rights activist Harry Belafonte; “La Sierra,” an examination of armed conflict in Colombia; and the Oscar-nominated “La Corona,” which documents a beauty contest in a women’s prison in Bogota.
The festival will also include an exclusive preview of the award-winning Chilean documentary “Mi Vida con Carlos,” a chronicle of the filmmaker’s efforts to learn about his father who was killed under the Pinochet regime.

There is no cost for entry to the festival, and local high school students will be provided with free transportation to the screenings. After the featured documentaries are screened at the Santiago festival, they will be shown in other Chilean cities, as well as in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina.
