Marking 50 Years of Work in the Andean Region and Southern Cone

The Ford Foundation marks its 50th anniversary in the Andean Region and Southern Cone with a series of dialogues and events highlighting efforts to deepen democracy, build greater inclusion and expand opportunity throughout the region.

About the Event

On Dec. 5 and 6 in Bogotá, Colombia, the foundation’s president, Luis A. Ubiñas, joined by staff from our regional office in Santiago, Chile—including Myriam Mendez-Montalvo, the foundation’s representative in the region—and other officials, will observe the anniversary with a symposium about current challenges and opportunities facing the region. Grantees are also invited to attend a special gathering where they will have the chance to meet, share experiences and explore opportunities to work together. An interactive exhibition of photographs, installed in Bogotá’s Parque de la 93, reflects our partners’ work on the frontlines of social change and will be on view all month.

  1. Session 1 Can Economies and Democracies Grow Deeper Together?
Despite economic crises around the world, the Andean Region and Southern Cone has managed to maintain relatively high rates of growth. But that growth has not been accompanied by reduced levels of inequality—and in some cases, it has coincided with growing social conflict. How does a strong democracy contribute to a robust economy? What can we do to advance social and economic inclusion in this context?

  3. Session 2 Cracking the Development Code: How to Unlock Real Participation
Natural resource wealth can be an important engine for sustainable economic growth, but its potential can be limited by varied and sometimes conflicting interests. How can we make sure that this wealth is shared fairly, and that indigenous peoples, Afro-descendants and tribal communities have a voice in decisions about the use of their land and resources? How can we work toward responsible, sustainable development that reduces poverty and increases opportunity?
  4. Lunch and Musical Performance Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto
  5. Session 3 National Deals, Local Consequences
Natural resource extraction has a profound impact on municipalities, administrative departments and provinces. Yet too often, the benefits are not widely shared. How can we advance transparency, inclusiveness and effectiveness in the government’s use of public resources? How can the costs and benefits of their use be more evenly distributed?
  6. Cultural Performance Totó la Momposina at Parque de la 93
