Joseph B. Gitari

Senior Program Officer Lagos

Joseph Gitari works on governance, human rights and social justice issues from the foundation's West Africa office in Lagos. His grant making focuses on strengthening democracy, respect for human rights, and greater social and economic justice. He previously worked in the foundation's Eastern Africa office in Nairobi.

Before joining the Ford Foundation in 1997, Joseph held several posts at Amnesty International, most recently as Africa regional development coordinator. He was founding editor of Global Justice: Journal of the Center on Rights Development at the University of Denver, and has also held numerous research positions.

Joseph has both a Ph.D. and a master's degree in international relations from the Graduate School of International Studies, University of Denver, and a bachelor's degree in mass communications and political science from the University of Denver.
