Ford Foundation Working with Visionaries on the Frontlines of Social Change Worldwide

For Grant Seekers

Where We Work

Our work will focus on the United States; Mexico and Central America; Southern Africa, as well as its border provinces and districts in Zimbabwe and Mozambique; and in Egypt, in the region covered by the foundation's Middle East and North Africa office.

This initiative also has a global component that supports advocacy organizations that work at international or global levels to protect and promote the human rights of vulnerable populations.

What We Fund

We support work on behalf of those who are most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS in every region where the initiative is implemented. Those populations include, for example, migrants and immigrants, women and girls, men who have sex with men, the poor, prisoners and IV drug users.

To address these issues, the initiative makes grants to organizations that engage in the following activities:

  • Legal and policy advocacy
  • Research that supports advocacy efforts
  • Training and leadership development
  • Network building and convenings to mobilize support for advocacy efforts

Globally, we support:

  • Litigation and advocacy of global significance
  • Convenings of litigators/advocates who engage in global HIV/AIDS work
  • Regional advocacy work that strengthens a global presence on human rights
  • Support for networks of HIV positive persons and organization

To Apply for a Grant

Follow these steps:

  • Review the Initiative(s) most relevant to your work.
  • Read our Grant Application Guide, which describes our grant-making process.
  • If you determine that your work aligns with our priorities, submit a Grant Inquiry. (While we welcome submissions, please keep in mind that our funds are limited in relation to the large number of worthwhile inquiries we receive. In a typical year, less than 1 percent of unsolicited inquiries result in a grant.)

Please Note:

It is important that you use our grant inquiry form—and refrain from contacting program officers directly. Given the volume of inquiries we receive, this allows us to log, track and respond quickly to your application.

Fellowships

The vast majority of foundation grants go to organizations. We provide a very limited number of fellowship opportunities for individuals through the Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships Program, which aims to diversify the faculties of American colleges and universities.

The foundation does not have any other active fellowship opportunities at this time.
