Promoting Transparent, Effective and Accountable Government
Team
Steven Solnick has served as Ford's representative in New Delhi since Oct. 1, 2008. He oversees the foundation's grant making efforts in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, which has averaged about $20 million annually in recent years. In addition, he makes grants for the Transparent, Effective, Accountable Government initiative in the region.
In his role, Steve also supervises all administrative aspects of the foundation's work in the region and manages relationships with host governments, local partners and the international community.
Prior to his arrival in India, Steve was the foundation's Moscow representative from 2002 to 2008. He also managed grant portfolios in the areas of HIV/AIDS and economic development in Russia.
Earlier, Steve was a professor of political science at Columbia University and coordinator for Russian studies at Columbia's Harriman Institute. He is the author of "Stealing the State: Control and Collapse in Soviet Institutions" (Harvard University Press, 1998) and numerous articles on comparative political economy and post-Soviet affairs.
Steve holds a Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University and two bachelor's degrees, one in politics and economics from Oxford University, where he was a Marshall scholar, and one in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a Fulbright scholar at Moscow State University and a national fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.
