Summary Description

The Office of Communications Editor is the principal writer and shaper of both written and digital content for the foundation’s strategic communications tools and channels. These include print brochures, annual report, weekly e-newsletters, multimedia scripts, infographic and data visualization content, live events materials, speeches/talking points/briefing materials, presentations, invitations, advertisements and special publications.

The Editor works with the entire Office of Communications staff to transform extremely complex social justice and policy ideas into accessible, compelling and engaging content. The Editor also ensures that our brand voice is consistent, appropriately pitched to our audiences, and communicates the foundation’s boldest ambitions and aspirations. The Editor’s writing must be rigorous and fact-based, extremely versatile and stylistically lyrical. He/she must be able to produce content quickly and juggle several writing/editing projects at once. We also expect the editor to be an idea generator, to come up with fresh, creative approaches to writing and packaging our content.

The Editor works within the editorial direction set by the Director of Content Strategy as well as the Director of Communications and VP of Communications and teams closely with the design, web and events teams to execute projects and meet demands for editorial content. He or she also works closely with senior- and executive-level staff, the VP of Communications, and Foundation Officers, as necessary.

Being central to our content development, the Editor is responsible for project managing editorial production for certain editorial products. This requires working with Office of Communications staff, other foundation colleagues, as well as outside vendors—freelance writers, copyeditors, researchers and proofreaders, translators. The Editor also oversees our summer interns, managing their time and projects and providing coaching and mentorship.

The Editor is responsible for ensuring that the most up-to-date editorial practices are applied to the foundation’s materials, staying abreast of developments in the field of communication and helping to push the Office of Communication to adapt to changing patterns in media consumption. The position also requires bringing in new talent, including freelancers, consultants and staff as needed.
