Thurgood Marshall Jr.
TrusteeThurgood Marshall Jr., a partner in the law firm of Bingham McCutchen LLP in Washington, D.C., and a principal at Bingham Consulting Group, serves on the Ford Foundation Board of Trustees. Currently he is chair of the board's Audit Committee and a member of the Executive; Nominating; Management and Governance; and Economic Opportunity and Assets committees.
Before joining the law firm, Marshall was a member of the White House staff in the Clinton administration as assistant to the president and cabinet secretary, coordinating White House relations with executive branch departments, from 1997 to 2001. Before serving in the White House, he was the director of legislative affairs and deputy counsel for Vice President Al Gore. Previously, he was counsel to three Senate committees: Judiciary; Commerce, Science and Transportation; and Government Affairs. Marshall began his legal career as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Barrington D. Parker of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He received a B.A. and a J.D. from the University of Virginia.
In December 2006, the U.S. Senate confirmed Marshall as a governor of the United States Postal Service. Currently, he serves as the board's chairman. His other board affiliations include The Third Way, National Women's Law Center and Supreme Court Historical Society. Marshall also serves on the advisory board of the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service and the ethics advisory committee of the United States Olympic Committee.
