Juliet V. GarcĂ­a

Dr. Juliet V. García, president of the University of Texas at Brownsville, serves on the Ford Foundation Board of Trustees. She is chair of the board's Proxy Committee and a member of the Democracy, Rights and Justice; Audit; and Finance committees.

In 1986, García became president of Texas Southmost College (TSC) and was recognized as the first Mexican-American woman in the nation to lead a college or university. In 1992, she joined the University of Texas System as president of the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB). She subsequently led the development of a successful and historic partnership between UTB and TSC and now serves concurrently as president of both.

In 2009, García was named by Time Magazine as one of America's 10 best college presidents. She serves on the boards of Humanities Texas, the Public Welfare Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She is also a member of The National Academies Committee on National Statistics: Measuring Higher Education Productivity, and the advisory boards of Raise Your Hand Texas and Complete College America.

García received her Ph.D. in communication and linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin, and her B.A. and M.A. in speech and English from the University of Houston. Her postdoctoral studies include work at the Institute for Educational Management and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and the Society of International Business Fellows at the London School of Business.
