Grant Makers
Peter Takirambudde serves as representative for the Ford Foundation in Southern Africa, overseeing all of the foundation’s work based out of our office in Johannesburg. Ford’s grant making in the region focuses on reducing poverty and inequality, promoting access to resources and services, and supporting good governance and the continued growth of a robust democracy.
Before joining the foundation in 2011, Peter worked on governance and human rights issues in Africa for more than 30 years. He was formerly executive director for Africa at Human Rights Watch, where he also served as chief strategist and spokesman with the responsibility of managing all of the organization’s activities on the continent. In addition, he served as founding CEO of the African Human Rights Consortium.
Peter has held numerous academic positions. He was a law professor and dean of social sciences at the University of Botswana and a law professor at Lund University in Sweden.
Peter was the recipient of a Ford Foundation Graduate Fellowship and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center of International Studies, Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University. He received a Ph.D. from Yale University and his bachelor’s degree from Makerere University in Uganda.
